Blog 5: How the Mexican government payed for my coffee grinder

One day I became a coffee addict

Suddenly at a very young age, I developed an affinity for very high quality coffee. Specialty coffee at the time was still budding back in Mexico where I used to live. It was starting metastasize in the U.S. This was back in 2018. For no particular reason coffee was my thing, other kids liked normal stuff, to this day I don’t know why I got in to it, it was a good thing ultimately.

If you know anything about coffee is that the first and most important thing, other than having coffee and water, for creating the perfect “specialty” cup of coffee is to have a proper burr coffee grinder. Non of that bladed coffee grinder nonsense. They are very expensive pieces of equipment and a kid like me had no money to justify something like that at all.

How did the Mexican government pay for it?

I love movies. So I decided to become an actor. I audition to a local culture house, they loved my performance, there’s a video out there, go find it. The classes would start in 6 months, I would be given a scholarship. About $5000 pesos (About $250 freedom dollars at the time) and started a successful acting career. But destiny did not have that for me in-store, instead, the world lost their shit collectively and we went all in to a lock down in 2020.

I had completely forgotten about the acting classes, until my mom told me that I was getting the money from the scholarship. The government was very stern on the money being spend on the pursuing of my education, and the development of arts. Yeah sure, I bought myself my dream coffee grinder as soon as my sweaty little paws touched that money.

The grinder

This coffee grinder has been with me longer than anything else I’ve ever had. It has gone across borders, continents and through so many stages of my life, never braking and making the perfect grind every single time for friend and family.

Ultimately if I think about it, the coffee made with it has gotten me through university, helped me along to create so much art, and it is helping me right now as I am writing this. I might sound sentimental about it, and maybe I am guilty of it, sure. But I fail to see how I am in any way wrong to think that it was indeed a good purchase and one that was done in the desire of the Mexican government.

I have always complained about Mexico my entire life, some times I recent it. But every time I drink a cup of coffee I can’t be hold back to think about how it payed for my oh so dear grinder, and so it is all forgiven. Thank you Mexican government.

I mean, this is is a tank. Works well, does it well. The price is justified. German engineering at is finniest. I will continue to use it until it breaks, then I’ll raise a stink about it online asking for a refund or something…
